Smart
Card/Tag
The most basic form of smart card
is the Integrated Circuit (IC) Memory Card. As the name
implies it has a memory that can store data, but unlike
some of its more sophisticated relatives has no data
processing capabilities. It is a simple little unit
based around a memory chip with non-programmable logic
and storage space that can hold up to 4KB of data, so
the simplicity of the technology makes IC cards very
economical to produce, and this is one of their big
plus points.
The advantage of smart card
- Proven to be more reliable than
the magnetic strip card
- Can store up to thousands of times
more information than a magnetic strip card
- Reduces tampering and counterfeiting
through high security mechanisms such as advanced
encryption and biometrics.
- Can be disposable or reusable
- Performs multiple functions
- Has wide range of applications
(e.g. banking, transportation, healthcare etc.)
- Compatible with portable electronics
(e.g. PCs, telephones)
- Can hold a large amount of personal
information, from medical/health history to personal
banking and personal preferences.
- Can carry all necessary functions
and information on the card, and therefore - unlike
magnetic strip cards - does not require access to
remote databases at the time of the transaction.
Card Material
PVC card
PVC cards are the most common type
of card in existence. VISA and ATM cards are both made
from 100% PVC material, and most access control and
smartcards use a PVC or PVC/Poly card for their users.
It is the card of choice for photo ID printers and is
ideally suited to a wide range of applications.
There are many different colours available on PVC and
PVC/Poly cards. Because some printing processes, such
as spot colour (screen) printing can not print colour
over a whole card, edge-to-edge, it might be a good
idea to start with a card blank that already has the
desired background colour. The most popular colours
are white, gold, platinum and bronze.
PET card
Traditionally there are three types of card stock used
and available on the market: PVC, Paper, and Laminates.
PET (Polyethylene terephthalate) is a new material that
exhibits many if not all of the desirable benefits without
many of the side effects associated with the original
three. PET is a non-toxic and biodegradable substance.
Unlike PVC cards, those like your credit cards, PET
does not crack or break.
PET Card Features:
- Thin & Light Weight
- Durable & Reliable
- Versatile & Flexible
- Environmentally Friendly
- Waterproof
